Winter is finally starting to head out......or is it?
Doesn't it just seem like winter has dragged on? Well, kind of....maybe....I mean, let's think about this.
Last year we got whipped with the polar vortex, which kept most of us inside for what seemed like weeks on end with bitter, below zero temperatures and wind chills you used to hear about only for Russia, Arctic regions, or the Antarctic. People living or working in those regions were no doubt chuckling (okay, laughing hysterically) at our complaints and whining, and to themselves were thinking, "and you thought all these years we were exaggerating....suck it up and deal with it!"
Well, we did, only to have a p.v. junior this year. True, not as severe, and nowhere as long lasting as last year's, but THEN, various parts of the country got hit with snow.......and a lot of it. We in the Chicagoland area got a taste of it as well, and having had to deal with ONLY about 20 or so inches, have a measure of sympathy, if not empathy, for those in the other areas that got truly dumped on.
It's times like this, with the end of winter cold and snow, that I wish I had a fireplace. A nice, pretty, controlled fire to take the edge off and keep me toasty. Let's face it, a furnace just warms you, and you don't sit in front of the furnace with a glass of wine and a good book. There's just something about a fire that is mesmerizing, hypnotic,...those who fire scry will tell you there is nothing like it. As for warmth, well in late winter, like now, there is nothing like a fireplace for it. The snow adds moisture into the air, especially when melting, and with the cold air still lingering, it makes for a damp cold, the kind that can get right down to your bones.
So when it gets like this, I start focusing on my runes that have fire energies associated with them...
Dagaz, the dawn rune. This is the cold light of the morning that chases away the obscurity of darkness, revealing the obstacles that trip us up, and inviting us to experience a new day. It is the fresh light of new beginnings, and the fresh opportunities that await us, if only we will reach out and grasp them.
Sowilo, the sun wheel, our life source that we cannot live without. Most of know this from the seasonal depression that can hit from the lack of natural sunlight in winter. Sunlamps can do only so much, it is the natural source of vitamin D3 that we need to keep our mental state level. Then there is the warmth we feel, even on the coldest days, as we turn our faces to the sun and feel its warmth, we bask in it, wishing we could feel it all over. All together now......Aaahhhhhhhhhh....
Kenaz, the torch rune. This is the fire, the light that guides us after the sun goes down. It keeps the darkness at bay, and even though its circle of light is not big, it is enough for the person carrying it to keep from stumbling along, and has its own measure of warmth.
But the power of Kenaz is so much more than the torch. It is the powerful, cleansing, purifying blast furnace that can smelt gold and steel, turning both into usable forms, from everything ranging from the most delicate jewelry to huge skyscrapers (in this case, the steel, not the gold...lol). At the same time, as a wildfire, it can decimate a forest, a mountain, or a neighborhood. It is also the volcano that erupts, spewing lava and ash from its caldera, its blazing river flowing down the sides. Or the slow moving constant flow of the thicker variety that forms and shapes the landscape. Ask any Hawaiian about Kilauea,.... heck the whole of the Hawaiian Islands was born of fire..........which just goes to show its sheer power to create as well as destroy.
All of these fire my passion, keep me warm in mind and, yes in body even. They share with me their knowledge, their wisdom, and their message......and I in turn now share with you.
Hail and warm blessings for the coming Spring!
